MCCOOK, Neb. -- Despite the weather forecast, McCook Speedway was never in doubt for racing on June 5. The storms stayed to the north and west, and the skies only gave a few sprinkles at the end of the race night. David Murray, Jr. of Oberlin, Kan., Shane Stout of North Platte, Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, Alex Pollmann of Trenton, and Bryan Herrick were the only ones who stormed, as they stormed to the feature wins.

Once heat race winner David Murray got by Jay Schilling of McCook for second place on lap five, the race for the IMCA Modified A Feature was for second place. What a race that was. Schilling was challenged at first by Nick Tubbs of Colby, Kan. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. and Brandon Hagan of McCook joined in a few laps later. While the other three were running the low line, heat winner Hagan opted for the high line. A caution with four laps to go got the field in single file. While Murray again drove away from the group on his way to the win, Schilling, Tubbs, and Frenier battled down low. Hagan got by the first two with a couple of laps to go, then got by Schilling on the last lap for the second spot. Schilling, Frenier, and Tubbs was the order of finishers for the rest of the field.

As bad as the first seven laps of the IMCA Stock Car A Feature was, the rest of the race was that good. After suffering through yellow flag fever, Casey Werkmeister of Maywood took the lead on lap nine. He had a fair lead, but when he opted to not clear a lapped car immediately with four laps to go, Shane Stout took advantage by driving to the high line and to the lead. Once Werkmeister cleared the car, he was able to challenge Stout for the lead, and actually had his front bumper out front on the backstretch on the last lap. Stout kept his foot on the pedal and crossed the finish line in first. Zach Schultz of North Platte finished ahead of Lloyd Meeske of Champion for third place, while Larry Pollmann of McCook rounded out the top five. Brandon Clough of Wallace and Dave Plowman of Gretna were the two Stock Car heat race winners.

Winning can be a habit, and Corey Cruzan may have started a new one. After taking the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, Cruzan showed the field the way. Cody DeWester of McCook stayed close, and heat winner Todd Pankonin of Benkelman soon joined in on the fun up front. Pankonin was able to find his way past DeWester, but could not deny Cruzan his second win in as many weeks. Leland Stute and Austin Davis of Benkelman finished in fourth and fifth place. Litton Stute of Benkelman, Leland’s son, won the other IMCA Hobby Stock heat race.

The Classic Modified A Feature was stopped almost as soon as it started. Chad Coleman of McCook tried to move high and out of the way at the start of the race, only to cut off the path of Trenton’s Max Pollmann. Pollmann’s car went up into the air, then flew off of the track in corner one, planting itself under the guardrail outside the track. The race was continued after several minutes of extrication of the car. Pollmann was not seriously injured. Heat winner Billy Aeby of McCook had hopes of earning his first A Feature win and built a safe lead when the caution came out with the race nearly half over. That allowed Alex Pollmann to restart right on Aeby’s tail. With one lap to go, Pollmann was able to sneak under Aeby for the lead, and earned the win on the following lap. Rick Touslee of Oberlin, Kan. was the third place finisher, ahead of Loren Pollmann of Trenton and Nate Berry of McCook.

Bryan Herrick won his fourth straight SportMod A Feature, but this win took more effort than the previous three. After a lap five caution bunched the field up to leader Herrick, Bill Matson of McCook showed that he some horsepower and made the pass for the lead. A caution on lap six again aligned the field, this time behind Matson. On the restart, Herrick returned the passing favor, and made that pass for the lead the last one in the race. Following Matson at the finish line was Josh Bopp of McCook, Austin Davis, and Duke Ebert of Culbertson. The SportMod heat race was won by Jimmy Weigel of Oberlin, Kan.

Next week, the United Rebel Sprint Series will bring their Sprint Cars to McCook Speedway for a show on June 12. The SportMods will have the week off, but the other classes will race. The gates will open at 6 PM, and the races will start at 8 PM, Central Time.
