MCCOOK, Nebr. -- Race fans got their fill of racing and then some July 10 at McCook Speedway as the Mod Lites joined the five regular classes for a night of the racing. The three IMCA-sanctioned classes also made up the rained out A Features from June 26. At the end of the night, David Murray of Oberlin, Kan., Dave Plowman of Gretna, Austin Davis of Benkelman, Corey Cruzan of Maxwell, Max Pollmann of Trenton, Bryan Herrick of Curtis, and Travis Bayne of Windsor, Colo. were the winner of the nine A Feature events.

David Murray took the lead on the third lap of the make up IMCA Modified A Feature after McCook driver John Huffman bobbled while pacing the field. Only one caution slowed Murray down on his way to the win. Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, Colo. Finished in second place, ahead of Jay Steffens of North Platte, Kyle Clough of Wallace, and Ronnie Wallace of North Platte.

Murray had a much tougher row to hoe in the second main event. Fellow heat winner Tony Schultz of North Platte was passed for the lead by Brandon Hagan of McCook on lap five. Murray got by him on lap six, but the fresh motor in Hagan’s car and the line he was driving got him back the lead on the next lap. The two would go back-and-forth for the next few laps until Dave was finally able to clear Hagan on lap eleven, and moved up on the track to earn his fifth straight A Feature win. Jeremy Frienier passed Brandon Hagan with one lap to go to earn his second-second place finish. Hagan was followed at the finish line by Ronnie Wallace and Don Hagan, Jr. of McCook.

The IMCA Stock Car class had a similar one-two finish for both of its main races. Dave Plowman survived the six cautions to take the win on the make up feature Casey Werkmeister of Maywood dodged the bullets to finish in second. Lloyd Meeske of Champion was the third place finisher. Zach Schultz of North Platte and Cale Osborn of Cozad rounded out the top five.

The second feature was paced for several laps by Mikey Dancer of North Platte. Dancer would give up the lead on lap eleven when his car decided to turn corner two a little too early, creating a four car pileup. Travis Tilford of North Platte inherited the lead, and set his sights on his first feature win of the year. Plowman had so much fun winning the first main event that he passed Tilford on lap twelve, then held off several advances by Werkmeister to eke out the double. Tilford finished ahead of fellow heat race winner Lloyd Meeske, Colton Osborn of Cozad, and the rest of the field. Plowman had a perfect night, as he also won the one heat race he drove in.

Both IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature were Burger King Nine For Nine Challenge Series races, and while no driver was able to complete the “double whopper”, they did put on some great racing. Austin Davis was involved in an accident early in their make up main, losing his nosepiece, right front fender, and right door panel. Despite the damage, he was able to get by Todd Pankonin of Benkelman and take what was left of his car to victory. Leland Stute completed a Benkelman sweep of the top three spots. Greg Hoing of Johnson Lake finished in fourth place, while Corey Cruzan finished in fifth place.

After high school students Dalton Dolan of Oberlin, Kan. and Dillon Thompson of Campbell won exciting eat races, fourteen cars lined up for a twenty lap race slowed only by one caution. Dolan was passed for the lead by Thompson on lap eight. Cruzan was right up there, and on lap eight, found a way by Thompson for the lead. The two were joined by Hunter Cantrall of Lexington in a three car battle for the lead. On lap fourteen, Thompson got into Cruzan and spun while trying to collect his car, creating the aforementioned yellow. When racing resumed, Corey put his car on cruise control on his way to this third win of the year. Austin Davis got by Cantrall with one lap to go to get him into second place. Leland Stute and Dolan rounded out the top five.

Although the Classic Modified drivers tried to confuse the fans with some driver and car changes, Max Pollmann made things clear that his Big Red Machine was the car to beat. On this Friday, it could not be beaten, as he took both the heat race and A Feature win. Brother Alex Pollmann, also of Trenton, took over his dad Loren’s race car after finishing his off in a June 26 rollover, bringing it to the finish line in second place. Billy Aeby of McCook finished in third place, ahead of Loren Pollmann and his new ride (the old Trent Jollenston machine), and Nate Berry of McCook.

Bryan Herrick, flying high after a top ten finish at the Harris Clash in Knoxville, Iowa on July 8, kept the “Rubber Duck” in the air with a sweep of the SportMod heat and A Feature wins. Brice Riley of Indianola, in his first night driving a SportMod, used the skills he acquired in his year of full-blown Modifieds to finish in second place. Lester Bieker of McCook finished in third spot, ahead of Jimmy Weigel of Oberlin, Kan. (and also made the main event at Knoxville), and Josh Bopp of McCook.

Nineteen Mod Lites from Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Kansas convened at McCook Speedway to put on a show for the crowd. Kris Bayne of Ault, Colo. jumped out to the lead at the start of the race and wanted to run away and hide, but cautions kept the field close. Travis Bayne was able to catch up to Kris, with the two battling for the top spot. Travis was able to take the spot around lap five, but was joined at the top spot by his brother Tracy Bayne of Fort Collins, Colo. Despite Tracy’s attempts, he could not shake Travis from the top spot or the win. Kris Bayne made it a Bayne sweep of the top three spots. Terry Vantine of Crete was the top Nebraska finisher, as he finished in fourth. Chick DeMoss of Lincoln took home fifth place. The other two Mod Lite heat races were won by Royal Fisher of Oberlin, Kan. and Brad Bayne of Ault, Colo.

After resting up, the crew of McCook Speedway will set it all back up again and hold races on Friday night, July 17. The Classic Modifieds and SportMods will run make up A Features from June 26. After that, all five classes will run a regular show. The gates open at 6 PM, and the races start at 8 PM, Central Time.
